Built in 1891 in memory of Leland Stanford, Jr., Stanford University covers 8,180 beautiful acres, centered around the "quad," a complex of classrooms and offices in early-California style. The renovated Stanford Memorial Church stands at its center. Stanford University Education. Students earn undergraduate degrees in three Schools at Stanford - the School of Humanities and Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the School of Earth Sciences. Stanford Athletics. The respected Stanford University Athletics program has won 70 NCAA team championships since 1980, as well as nine consecutive NACDA director's cup titles, awarded annually to the nation's most successful athletics program. From 1990 to 2002, Stanford athletes won 47 Olympic Medals and 39 individual NCAA championships. The Stanford School of Medicine is a premier research-intensive institution that improves health through collaborative discoveries and innovation in patient care, education and research. They foster a two-way transfer of knowledge between research laboratories and patient-care settings with faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars and students engaging in interdisciplinary efforts that transfer this knowledge into therapies to treat and prevent disease. Stanford Hospital & Clinics is known worldwide for its state-of-the-art care in cardiovascular medicine and surgery, cancer diagnosis and treatment, organ transplantation, neurology and neurosurgery, and complex surgery.
