Historic Palo Alto Hotel Celebrates 90th Anniversary

November 24, 2015

On December 3, The Cardinal Hotel in Palo Alto will celebrate its 90th Anniversary. The invitation-only event will include live music from the 1920s, posters of the Flapper Era, hotel staff dressed in period attire, a commemorative photo for each guest, viewing of the remodeled rooms, catered food and wine service, and remarks by the General Manager, Stephanie Wansek.

Built in 1924, the Cardinal Hotel was the first, non-wooden framed hotel in Palo Alto, remarkable for its Renaissance architectural style, elegant furnishings, terra-cotta facade, and magnificent lobby. The Palo Alto Times welcomed the Cardinal Hotel into the community proclaiming that there was “not a finer commercial hotel building in the state.”

The Cardinal Hotel has been owned by the Bjarne Dahl family for more than 70 years, and now Stephan Dahl oversees the operation of the hotel. He is continuing his father’s life-long commitment to maintaining the hotel “as first class in every respect” and “preserving old world elegance in the center of busy, downtown Palo Alto.”

In 2013, an extensive renovation of The Cardinal Hotel created contemporary rooms with dark wood furnishings, added media hubs and modern amenities, and refurbished the commanding, spacious lobby.

The Cardinal Hotel continues to be distinctive among small hotels in California because of the personal attention each guest receives, the fine, impeccable accommodations, the high level of guest satisfaction and loyalty, and the hotel’s long and close relationship with Stanford University.

In her recent Proclamation recognizing the 90th anniversary of The Cardinal Hotel, Palo Alto Mayor Karen Holman concluded that the hotel is important to the city both “as an historic, iconic landmark and as a vibrant modern hotel.”
